Pre-school phonics video classes

The Pre-school class videos are designed to teach the sound for single letters of the alphabet.

Children will learn the sound for the letter, using the Jolly phonics actions and songs.

Buttons the bear helps us with our learning and shows us what objects he has in his letter bag starting with the letter of the week.

We then take part in fun activities to help us practise making the sound and recognising what the letter shape looks like.

Dancing is included to help build gross motor skills and other activities are also designed to work on fine motor skills (important for those future hand writing skills).

Activities to help work on listening skills are also included, and we usually finish with an oral blending activity. It is important that children can hear how letters are put together to make words, before they start learning to read written words. So we play games to work on these skills too.

Children are introduced to each new letter in an order set out by scheme called "Letters and Sounds", which follows this order:

s, a, t, p, I, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, e, u, r, h, b, f, l, j, v, w, x, y, z, qu

Each class is progressive and recaps the sounds previously taught at the beginning. It is therefore a good idea to please purchase and follow them in this order.

If your child is new to learning the sounds, I would recommend spending 1 week on each new sound. Watch the video once (or more if your child wants to) and carry out other activities throughout the week to reinforce the sound. (You will receive a handout with extra activity ideas to help you with ideas)

Recap Classes

I now have recap classes available for the individual letter sounds.

These are grouped into blocks of around 6 letters per class and are great for recapping the sounds and moving your child forward with reading and writing CVC (3 letter) words.

These can be found in the Pre-school or reception sections of the shop

Reception Phonics Video Classes

The current Reception phonics video classes are deigned to revise the digraphs and trigraphs usually taught over the course of the reception year at school (phase 3 Letters & Sounds) ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure & er

The video classes begin with a 'beat the teacher' style game, to recap the sounds. They then move on to a game which practises listening for the sounds (phonemes0 in words and finding the correct letters (graphemes) to represent this.

There is then another game/activity, where children practise spelling words containing some of the Phase 3 graphemes.

Finally we finish with some Tricky word practise!

If your child has not yet been introduced to all of the phase 3 digraphs & trigraphs (ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure & er)

I would recommend either the individual sound recap classes, which also focus on reading and writing CVC (3 letter) words

or the classes I am currently adding to which include groups of the digraphs.

Year One/Two Phonics Video Classes

The current Year One phonics video classes are deigned to revise all of the digraphs, trigraphs and split digraphs, usually taught over the course of Year One at school (phase 5 Letters & Sounds) So are also a great recap for Year Two pupils.

As with the reception class videos, children will have the opportunity to recap the sounds for the graphemes, identify them, spell words containing them and also practise some of the tricky words covered in Year One.

If your child has not yet been introduced to all of the phase 5 sounds (ay, ou, ie, ea, oy, ir, ue, aw, wh, ph, ew, oe, au, ey, a_e, e_e, i_e, o_e & u_e )

I would recommend the reception phonics videos 1 & 2 which recap all of the sounds encountered in phase 3 as a great recap

or the classes I am currently adding to which include groups of the digraphs.
